I was at a party recently, and found myself making smalltalk with somebody I didn't know. I'm not good at this type of thing, really - fishing for personal details etc - so I usually try to steer conversation into pop-cultural waters as a safe bet. So, picking up on this dude's love of The Beatles, using all my powers of imagination I asked him: "what's your favourite Beatles record, then?". To which he replied "I think it's Hey Jude". This has been playing on my mind ever since, as I just don't think of 'singles' as 'records'. To me, the term 'record' refers to an LP or album, or what is generally passed off now as a CD. Maybe this is just evidence of my rock snobbery, but I think to refer to a 'single' as a 'record' is just lazy, and another drawing pin in the bare sole of the committed music enthusiast.
